Emma Raho reviews Tutla
Clothing label Tutla has recently hit the ground running in New Zealand as an already established, well regarded and high end brand overseas. A staple in the wardrobe of many models, actresses and socialites on the Indian A list, owner and chief designer Shibani Shetty has come to sprinkle some exotic magic over the New Zealand fashion scene and we’re absolutely here for it.
The ready-to-wear capsule designs encompass the runway chic of Paris, the romance of Milan and the casual, understated cool of the Kiwi fashion scene. Tutla’s genius is in how versatile her designs are whilst still remaining a unique and beautiful statement piece. This balance of eye catching yet timeless is why Tutla has proved to be such a huge sensation abroad.
While the label is new to our shores, Shibani’s designs have already graced the red carpet, events such as The GQ awards, and been featured in glossy mags like Harpers Bizarre. Celebrities spotted wearing Tutla clothing include Bollywood icons Alia Bhatt, Rasika Dugal, Radhika Apte and Deepika Padukone.
Shibani Shetty, the Kiwi-Indian designer behind Tutla says “My love for fashion started when I was a little girl playing dress ups . Growing up, my love for fashion became a bit of an addiction when I started hoarding fabrics. I used to raid my mum’s closet for silk sarees and take them to the dress makers to upcycle them to pretty outfits . I was soon designing clothes for friends and family”.
Shibani named her label Tutla from the word ‘tulu’ meaning ‘to drape’ due to the focus of femanine and highly wearable designs. Her mission is for every New Zealand woman to have a Tutla staple item in her wardrobe.
On the subject of her inspirations Shibani says says “My designs are very much influenced by the aesthetics that surround us. The relaxed Kiwi way of life, the easy going attitude which reflects in our effortless designs, accentuating the natural flow and flare of the fabric. Being blessed to be living by the bay I love how the vibe that sets in around the beach it really inspires me and I get to experience it everyday.“
