How My Mental Health Journey Led Me To Create Oh Vienna

We got to have a yarn with the talented founder of Oh Vienna, Kat Farron. Kat is not only the incredibly talented entrepreneur behind every aspect of Oh Vinenna, but she is is also using her platform to advocate for mental health and some great dog rescues.

SP: What led you to starting this business and what is it exactly?

Oh Vienna started from a mix of love, practicality, and purpose. I adopted my rescue dog, Vienna, during a really tough time with my mental health, and she completely changed my world. When I found myself out of work, I needed something to spark a bit of joy again. Vienna’s a total water baby, and I was constantly replacing collars that couldn’t keep up with her adventures. I couldn’t find one that ticked all the boxes, so I decided to make my own: durable, waterproof, stink-proof, and quick-release collars that actually last. Every part of an Oh Vienna collar is replaceable, making them better for the planet and your wallet.

Creating Oh Vienna gave me purpose, direction, and a way to climb out of the dark.

SP: Like many Kiwi’s you’ve struggled with mental health. A lot of people can be very reserved about mental health. What has made you want to speak about it so publicly?

For a long time I didn’t. But the truth is, talking about it has opened doors for connection and understanding that I never expected. It’s true what they say – you never know what someone else is going through. If sharing my story helps even one person feel less alone, then it’s worth it. We talk so openly about all sorts of everyday things, but rarely about what a panic attack actually feels like, or how to even start finding a therapist. Mental health needs to be part of regular conversation,  not just something we talk about once someone’s in crisis.

SP:Tell us a bit about the Saving Hope Foundation? Why was this an important charity for you to support?

From day one I knew I wanted to support a charity. The Saving Hope Foundation rescues and rehabilitates dogs in need – lots of the dogs come to them in heartbreaking condition and need vet care. Their team works tirelessly to give those dogs a second chance. Vienna herself came from a rescue background, so supporting Saving Hope felt deeply personal. Every donation and collar that helps them keep doing that work feels like a full-circle moment for us.

SP: Why do you think the relationship between dogs and humans is so special?

It’s the most honest connection there is. Dogs don’t care what kind of day you’ve had, how you look, or what’s on your to-do list – they just show up for you. It’s amazing how Vienna just knows when I’ve had a rough day, she’ll sit beside me and put her head on my shoulder and just look at me like I’m her world! She really is my soul dog.

SP: Do you have any great dog care tips or tricks for our audience? Our Sans Pareil team are great dog lovers!

Don’t underestimate how much mental stimulation can tire a dog out! When the weather’s awful, I’ll hide treats around the house or wrap them up in a tea towel, it keeps Vienna entertained for ages.

SP: Did you have experience in the animal industry before starting your business?

Not at all! My background is in marketing, so I approached it from a storytelling point of view first. But I’ve learned so much. from materials and manufacturing  to GST and bookkeeping.  t’s been a steep learning curve, but one I’ve loved every step of the way.

SP: Were there any big challenges to face along the way?

So many! Manufacturing delays, supply chain headaches, endless sampling – you name it. There were times I wondered if I’d ever actually get collars in stock. But every challenge taught me something. I’ve learned to trust my gut, take things slow, and prioritise quality over shortcuts.

SP: You named the business after your dog, Vienna. Tell us about her and why she’s the goodest girl.

Believe it or not, Vienna actually struggles with fear-based reactivity towards other dogs – especially when she’s on lead. She’s come such a long way since I adopted her, and I often wish she could tell me what she’s so afraid of, or what life was like before she found me.! But she’s the reason I get outside every day, the reason I laugh when I don’t feel like it, and the reason Oh Vienna exists at all. She’s cheeky, loyal, endlessly forgiving.

SP: Are there any upcoming products in the future you can tell us about or even share a sneak peek?

Yes! We’ve just launched XL collars for our bigger dogs, and leads are next on the list – with a few surprises in the works for Christmas. Follow us on Instagram for a sneak peek.

SP: What would you say to other Kiwis (or anyone) who might be struggling with their mental health right now?

That you’re not broken, and you’re definitely not alone. Healing doesn’t look the same for everyone – sometimes it’s therapy, sometimes it’s a walk with your dog, sometimes it’s just resting. It’s okay to move slowly, to rebuild quietly, and to reach out for help.

Make sure to give Kat and Vienna a follow over on Instagram and check out their amazing collars!
