You might have noticed that Mumma J's has been featured on Sans Pareil before, in our 11 Dupes article, and that's because we LOVE these skincare products and their ethos. Based in Auckland, and in the grassroot stage of selling online and at local markets, this local skincare brand is lovingly made by Julia Holder; a grandmother who has worked for one of New Zealand's biggest beauty brands. Mumma J's arose the way all good products do - trying to solve the specific aliments Julia and her family suffered from. Sans Pareil caught up with Julie to chat more about Mumma J's.

SP - Tell us about Mumma J! The name came from your grandchildren, is that right?
This came from my children – they call me “mumma” so it made sense to call the business Mumma J’s
SP - How did you learn how to make your creations?
I have a certificate in aromatherapy and have always been interested in keeping my skin healthy ( I have an allergy to SPF as well as sensitive skin, so it makes it hard to find products that my skin doesn’t react to) I research “like” products – internet/books, read up about the ingredients. I also ask my customers/family about different products for feedback.
SP- What ingredients are your favourites to work with? What are your favourites to use on your own skin?
I love Tamanu Oil, it has healing, restorative and protective qualities. Great for skin rejuvenation, burns and scars. Coconut oil is another of my “go to” ingredients – rich in short & medium chain fatty acids – means great healing benefits.
SP- Any skincare/beauty tips you would like to share?
Wash you face twice a day – cleanse, tone and moisturise. Love your skin – it’s the largest organ on your body.
SP - What are some of the challenges you've faced in business?
Building up a customer base. Creating products that are not only helpful to people but also profitable.
SP - What have been some highlights of being in business?
I love my customers, some have become friends. Making product that helps people and getting the positive feedback that my products are making a difference in someone’s life.
I’m based at the Howick Market every Saturday and love being part of the “market” family.
SP - What are some of your fave small, NZ businesses?
Freedom Road, YNuts, Kohkoz, Chinga Clothing, Pass Me Buy, Mikes Food Products, Oh Thats So Crafty.
SP - If you weren't running Mumma J's, what would you most like to be doing?
I honestly have no idea - travelling.
SP - What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spending time with my children and grandchildren, pilates, knitting, walking my dog.
SP - Why is buying NZ made important to you as a shopper?
It's important to support NZ made businesses, as they are helping and supporting our communities and families.
SP - What 3 things are at the top of your Christmas Wishlist this year?
Continuing good health, spending time with my family.
