Everyone’s been asking the same question…
Why didn’t GANNI headline Copenhagen Fashion Week? GANNI of course, has headlined
Fashion Week four years in a row. However, this year they are nowhere to be seen bar a
small textile exhibition, (at least on the official schedule anyway).
This year they claimed to step back from the fashion scene to leave way for upcoming
designers. Creative director himself, Ditte Reffstrup spoke last week stating, ‘We’ve been
debating this for a while. We needed to rest at some point, and the last couple of seasons, young designers have been struggling. We want to take the opportunity to welcome newcomers to our platform.” While this, is at least partly true there are many speculations as to why GANNI wouldn’t be at this year’s fashion week.
Copenhagen Fashion Week Criteria requires each brand to be “50% Sustainable,” These
standards are based on the United Nations sustainable development goals which were
created by a panel of international sustainability experts and consultants.
Allegedly GANNI no longer reaches this criteria and is no longer accepted to show at Fashion Week. This may indicate why they were not on show this season.
Although GANNI received its official B Corp Certification in 2022, GANNI itself does not claim to be a sustainable brand. “We don't identify as a sustainable brand, because at its core fashion thrives on newness and consumption, which is a major contradiction to the concept of sustainability.
That's the honest truth. Instead, we're focused on becoming the
most responsible version of ourselves.”
GANNI exhibited their A/W 24’ collection in secret today, 2nd February 2024 at an exclusive event, separate from the official Copenhagen Fashion Week schedule. We now all wait with anticipation to see if GANNI will reveal the real reasons why they didn’t exhibit their collection at CPHFW.
