Upcycled Beauty – Picnic Blanket Jacket

By Kirsten Greig

Ever sifted through the mountain of blankets in your local op shop? Normally I’m looking for granny crochet blankets, but occasionally I’ll come across an awesome plaid check wool blanket. It never occurred to me this was more than something to have in the car boot just incase.

However there was something about this red & green number that caught my eye last week and a lightening strike of an idea formed in my bargain thirsty mind.

Backstory…

Recently I acquired a couple of vintage kimonos, one of which is stained in places & not really something I could wear in its current state. The fabric is a gorgeous silk. So I whipped out the seam ripper & harvested the fabric for a top / dress or something – yet to decide. Anyway.. long story short, it gave me some insight into the construction of a kimono. This, coupled with my recent weekly guilty pleasure viewing of AJLT (the Sex and the City reboot). On the show Carrie & Miranda have been draped in all manner of clashing plaids by Molly & Danny the show’s wardrobe gurus.

Well you can see where this is going…

One new, very cosy jacket. The damage: $20 and about 3 hours of work. One less thing in the bin. One more Upcycled beauty.
