Mandatory menswear label couldn’t resist photographing the plumage of their new bold Racer
Jacket ‘Aperol’ in front of Wellington’s “Bird of the Century)” mural this week.
The mural painted by artist Kiran Parbhu is right next door, to the left of Mandatory’s store at 21
Ghuznee St, Wellington and celebrates the Bird of the Year competition.
The mural provided the perfect backdrop for their “just dropped” limited-edition sporty biker
style zip jacket which fits and feels like a summer night out. Mandatory founder and designer
Clare Bowden says inspiration for the name came from an Aperol spritz because of the fizz and
punchy orange colour of the Korean-sourced canvas print.
It’s a style that is both pared back and bold as well as easy to wear and designed to stand out in
the flock.
Like all things Mandatory brand, the jacket is made in Wellington at Mandatory’s atelier/store,
21 Ghuznee St from pre-shrunk cotton canvas and unlined with bound seams.
Taller guys can order custom fit for the same price as off the rack. Mandatory can offer this
because rather than making up all its fabric, Mandatory holds some back, so that customers
requiring custom-made items can still have the garment that they want or a particular fabric that they see on display in the store or on the website.
