This was the very last show for me at NZ Fashion Week, on Sunday night, and honestly, I was tired and grumpy. This show was SO cool though, and unlike anything I had ever seen before. Exhibit was a showcase of all the best and newest hair looks from several of the best salons around New Zealand.
Most of all, I loved the vibe – there’s something about a hair show that brings out people’s playfulness. My favourite part (of course) were the drag queens and performers in the most amazing, elaborate costumes taking to the floor. I’ll stop blabbing on now and let you gaze upon the amazing images!

What is Exhibit?
Exhibit (www.exhibitnz.com), the boundary-pushing showcase by the country’s leading hair stylists, brought New Zealand Fashion Week 2016 to a dramatic conclusion. At 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 28th in front of an audience of 700, this industry collective presented a creative spectacle like no other. “Exhibit is the only non-competitive hairdressing showcase the New Zealand industry has,” explains founder Stephen Cockle. “By removing the element of competition, we remove all the rules and regulations that normally limit the outcome, leaving the imaginations of these talents to run wild.”
Second year of the show
2016 will mark the second year of the showcase, with Stephen and co-founder Andrea Cockle launching the inaugural Exhibit during New Zealand Fashion Week last year. The duo, both industry veterans who recently opened Parnell salon ASC, created Exhibit on their return from London, when they learnt that no events of this nature existed in New Zealand.
A runway show curating hair, fashion and makeup
The format of Exhibit sees each salon present a runway show, with all elements specially curated, from the theme and the music to the fashion, makeup and model lineup. There are no rules as the industry’s most in-demand stylists work alongside one another to produce a collaborative creative symphony.
Salons involved in Exhibit
2016’s participants include Fabrik, the Hamilton salon who use hair as a fabric to create installations; Ryder, the revered Auckland salon who will collaborate with beloved fashion label WORLD on their showcase this year; Newmarket-based Hamilton Brooks, the recipient of numerous accolades including ‘Salon of the Year’; the Auckland arm of international powerhouse Toni & Guy, who boast some of New Zealand’s most sought-after stylists; and Whangarei’s boutique salon Three Hairdressing, who recently won the Industry NZ Team of the Year Award 2016.
Friends and key sponsors also involved
Boutique Brands are this year’s lead sponsors, on behalf of Pravana, Davines, Oribe, R+Co and Original & Mineral. Other key partners include New Zealand Fashion Week, MAC makeup, and the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers.
