Hi Andrea, thank you for chatting with us! Luna Bonita is a beautiful name,
how did you think of it?
Thank you! Well, my idea was to incorporate some of my heritage in the name, so ideally something in Spanish. At the same time, I wanted it to feel familiar and to be easy to pronounce.
I’ve always loved the name Luna, is the name of my pet back at home. ‘Luna Bonita’
felt very authentic to me, and authenticity is one of the main qualities I wanted to transmit through my brand, so the name was a great fit!
I see you came over from Guatemala in 2019. What made you think of NZ?
I am a travel enthusiast; I love to explore different places and learn about other cultures.
New Zealand caught my interest due to its landscape and nature. I was living in Germany when I decided to visit NZ back in 2019, at that time a friend of mine was living here, and he turned out to be my husband now! We both fell in love with the country and its people, so we decided to stay permanently.
We love sustainable fashion here at Sans Pareil! Do you have any tips or ideas
for anyone wanting to start being more sustainable or environmentally friendly
in their own lives?
A way to start making a change is to evaluate how they can make small changes in their daily lives, to reduce, reuse and recycle. For example, ask yourself how can I plan my meals better to reduce food waste? How can I reuse some of the items I already have at home instead of buying new ones? Could I
maybe take the train instead of driving?
When looking at the current environmental issues, they might seem overwhelming, but if we all start by making small modifications to our way of living, collectively those changes can have a big impact.
I would also encourage people to support brands that are trying to make a positive change. Research before you make a purchase, and whenever possible, make an effort to choose items that are slow-made instead of mass-produced.
Do you have any designers or other creative people you look up to?
I really admire the artisans I partner with to create Luna Bonita’s products. They are preserving ancient weaving techniques and embedding their culture into the patterns, colours and designs of the textiles they make.
These weaved textiles are made by indigenous women back in my home country (Guatemala). The fact that they can be so creative despite the challenges they face in their everyday lives, including discrimination and lack of respect for their cultural rights, is mesmerizing to me. They keep weaving these designs and wearing them as their traditional clothing. I think this delivers a powerful message: ‘We are here, and we are proud of who we are’
What's next for Luna Bonita, are there any plans for your future you would like
to share with us?
I would love to explore new markets and start exporting Luna Bonita’s products to Australia. I also plan to expand the accessories range that I recently added to the website, I think this has a great potential and there are some exciting unique items that can be incorporated to the category.
Outside of creating, what do you enjoy doing? I enjoy traveling with my husband, learning new languages, doing dance workouts, some scrapbooking or just staying at home with a good movie.
Do you have any Netflix or book/music recommendations to our audience?
Netflix, I would recommend Lupin (series), Maid (series) and Little Women (movie).
If you are interested in becoming an entrepreneur, I would recommend the book 48-
Hour Start-up: From idea to launch in 1 weekend by Fraser Doherty.
For music, I enjoy Birdy and Gabrielle Aplin, also really looking forward to hearing
Taylor Swift’s new album!
Thank you so much for chatting with Sans Pareil! Thank you for the opportunity!
